Anytime someone finds out my career is in the fitness industry, they almost always ask me how they can lose 10 more pounds. Either that, or they pat their belly and tell me how they’ve been meaning to get on a program, and could I give them a simple program to help them get started. “Sure,” I say smiling. “Jump into a hole 15 feet deep and try to get out.” This is usually met by a laugh and a joke about how they’d need a winch to get out of something like that. “Ok,” I say after giving them the appropriate courtesy laugh, “how about I put you on the third floor of a burning building with 20 seconds to get down the stairs and outside before the roof collapses?” By this time they’re usually starting to get the message. The message is that fitness is a choice, and so is weakness. For those of you thinking about maybe starting to think about possibly doing some situps, think about how nice it would be not to be stuck at the bottom of that hole waiting for someone with a winch.
