There have been several CrossFit t-shirts made by various affiliates that also echo that sentiment, albeit a little more threateningly. They say things like “Shut Up And Lift” or “Go Heavy Or Go Home”. I do understand, however, the reluctance that comes naturally with taking a chance. Take today’s photo, for example. Megan is doing what looks like some crazy version of the Electric Slide, but she’s actually in the middle of a spectacular fall as she was trying to swing from ring to ring in the obstacle course WOD the other day. (As a side note, I was looking for a more colorful word than “fall” to describe what it was that she did, and www.thesaurus.com was helpful enough to offer “belly flop”, “header” and “nose dive”, among others.) She “Just Did It” and she landed on her ass.
The point of this illustration (other than to poke fun at Megan) is to suggest that you go after whatever you’re doing full-on and head-first, because that’s where you discover how awesome you can be. No one in the world ever achieved anything worth achieving by approaching it with temerity. If you’re going to do it, then REALLY do it, and do it all the way. Sometimes you’ll fail, and you’ll do it big and gloriously and in front of a lot of people (and one of those people just may have a camera and access to a blog – one can only hope to be so lucky), but at least you gave it all you had.
Yes, I’m making fun of Megan for falling off that ring, but if you look in the photo gallery you’ll see a few shots of her swinging strong and gracefully across those rings. If she had approached that obstacle with anything less than the desire to go big or go home, well, I wouldn’t have anything to write about today.
