Sometimes people ask me why they would want to do CrossFit.
“Because it gives you an increased work capacity across broad time and modal domains,” I tell them. I get a kick out the blank stare this response usually generates. “No seriously,” I add just before they run screaming away, “because it’s fun, it gets you in better shape than you ever thought you could be in, and also the work capacity thing.”
“So, uh…why would I want a better…uh…work capacitor?”
Asking a CrossFitter why they would want a better work capacity is like:
- Asking a gear-head why 300hp is better than 200hp
- Asking Popeye why he doesn’t eat more candy
- Asking a woman why she needs 73 pairs of shoes
You may be able to do what you currently need to with the resources you currently have (or maybe not), but wouldn’t it be easier to do a 200hp job if you have 300hp at your command? Isn’t it clear that spinach is better for you than candy? And about those shoes…well, I don’t think I’ll ever understand that one.
